So I recently really fell in love with an underwear company called Dear Kate. I have never actually bought or worn the underwear but I am in love with their advertising! It is so hard to find an underwear company that has advertising that shows a wide variety of women and celebrates the woman's body and doesn't sexualize it. I mean, it is women who wear women's underwear so doesn't it make sense to advertise to us, the average women, rather than have overly sexualize advertisements that are basically porn and a "fashion" show that is broadcast on TV and is mostly watched by men? *cough cough* Victoria's Secret *cough cough* And I guess in a way to try to jump on the bandwagon of loving your body and recognizing that there are so many different types of beautiful, we get some advertisements like these. Yep that's totally different from what we always see (sarcasm). So in a world where this is what we are used to it is so refreshing to see an underwear company that actually loves your body and makes you feel empowered. The first thing that caught my eye was an instagram picture with the hashtag #notcontrovercial. This was that picture. (also I totally want that shirt) Then I looked through more of their photos and they have so many pictures of women in their underwear all with the caption #notcontroversial. This really reminded me of the Meghan Tonjes #bootyrevolution. In case you don't know about this, Meghan had posted a picture on instagram of her in her underwear which was later taken down and she fought it and then started the booty revolution, full story below! But then Dear Kate did something even cooler. They did an ad with not just any women in underwear, and not just women of different shapes and sizes and colors in underwear but women of different shapes, sizes, and colors AND are women in the Tech industry. These are the women people need to start looking up to. They are examples of women who work in a field dominated by men, they are smart, and they can rock some undies while coding. These are the kind of ads that the world needs. I want to flip through a magazine or look up at a billboard and see women that are worth looking up to. The whole goal in advertising is to look at the people in the advertisement and say "wow I want to be them and this product is going to make me be more like them, and therefore make my life better". By showing advertisements that feature women who are diverse and intelligent, it shifts the characteristics that we look up to from just physical beauty to physical beauty and success. It creates an ideal woman that is more dynamic, who has more worth than just her outer appearance. If you want to read further I would suggest this article and also checking out the Dear Kate facebook page. Never forget that your body is #notcontroversial
