College 101: Packing List

7/6/2014

PictureMy sister and I at her graduation.
My little sister just graduated high school and is getting ready to join me at VT in the fall. All of this excitement is reminding me of what it was like going into college. Exciting. Terrifying. Lonely. Confusing. But mostly exciting. This really inspired me to do a new series called College 101 where I'll give advise I wish I had gotten when I was a freshman. I'm talking real, legit, advise, no bullshit.
I thought it was only logical to start out with a packing list since I'm sure all the college newbies have started shopping now.

Yes that is my mom's car, and yes that is a mattress strapped on top. We put that up there by ourselves and were stressed about it the whole ride down.

I even included little check boxes for you guys!

Let me know if there's anything else that I should add.

Whenever people hear that I go to Virginia Tech there are always some responses I expect to hear...
"Wow that is such a great school you must be very smart"
"Go hokies!"
"Do you go to the football games they must be fun"
...and of course I almost always hear people comment on the shooting. Most people are very respectful and understand that it is something we treat very seriously. Some people are ignorant and say comments like "wow do you wear a bullet proof vest to class?" (yes I have gotten that before). Since today marks the 7 year anniversary of the tragedy I thought it would only be appropriate to post about it.
It is a shame that such a wonderful university has something so horrible in its past. I think though that with any situation it is important to look on the bright side even when there seems like there isn't one. Virginia Tech has the most wonderful community of students and faculty out of any school, hands down, and that's why I chose to call this place my home. April 16th didn't break us, it didn't make us weak, it made us strong. We are the Hokie Nation, we will prevail.
I remember as a freshman going to the candlelight vigil.

It was so sad to hear the stories of each of the 32 people who died. One story that really stood out for me was the story of one of the professors who helped get all of his students to safety first and then died because he couldn't get himself to safety. That's what a true Hokie is. I think it's important to remember the people that day that when faced with evil still decided to do the right thing.
After the whole ceremony was over people started to chant "Lets go" "Hokies" and it was one of the most beautiful moments of my college career. It was like I could hear the community come together in support. Here is a video from the candle light vigil that happened two days after the shooting.
One of the people who died in the shooting was one of my sorority sisters, Maxine Turner. Although I never knew her personally, I hope that one day I'll be able to meet her in heaven and thank her for starting the sorority that means so much to me and so many other girls. Me and all my sisters are her legacy. Supporting women in engineering through sisterhood is her legacy, and we will never forget her.
Here is another video that I absolutely love. This video perfectly captures how anyone related to Virginia Tech feels about the tragedy. We are sad but we are strong.
And I'll end with my all time favorite quote associated with Virginia Tech.

Go Hokies! xoxo Natalie

PS. I totally was crying while I wrote this so please excuse if it's not my highest quality post. I have a lot of things I wanted to say and not a lot of space to say it so my thoughts are a little jumbled.

Super Bowl ... Mostly just commercials

2/2/2014

So I'm not a super sports fan. I watch Virginia Tech sports like it's my job, and I'm a fair weather Philadelphia sports fan so this Super Bowl isn't a big event for me. There are two things that I am really invested in this year though!

1. Doritos Commercial!

Picture
So every year Doritos holds a competition for fans to make a commercial that will play in the Super Bowl. This year one of the finalists (and the winner!!) is a Virginia Tech graduate! It's not only cool because their commercial will air during the Super Bowl but they will also win $1 million and get a chance to work on the set of Avengers 2! Here is a link to the commercial and here is a link to a video about the guy who made the commercial and here is a link to the Doritos website so you can check out the other finalists. The commercial is really cute and innocently funny. I am so happy it won!

2. GoldieBlox

Picture
Ok I can not rave enough about how much I love GlodieBlox.  It is a company that makes toys that are geared towards young girls to help promote engineering. They create toys that help girls develop skills like spatial visualization that are essential to engineering which is a primarily male dominated field! As a female engineer I think this is the most amazing thing that can happen to the young girls of America. Almost every female engineer I talk to says that as a child they played with legos or lincoln logs which I think helped a lot in them developing skills that we use now. Ok ok enough raving from me I'll let the company speak for itself. Here is a link to the competition. Here is a link to one commercial by them. Here is a link to a Ted Talk by the founder.

I hope whatever team you are rooting for wins and if your team isn't playing then I hope you enjoy your wings and beer (or whatever you're having).
