I watch a lot of TV and movies. I said it. Admitting is the first step. Since media is notorious for portraying women in a negative light (see this, also this, oh yeah this too). Because of this reason I like to spend my time watching shows and movies that portray women in a powerful light. Here are some of my favorite female characters. 1. Elle Woods - Legally BlondeI love Elle Woods. She shows us that just because you wear pink and are girly doesn't mean you are to be messed with. She set her goals high and reached them through hard work. She didn't let people's expectations of her change her. She stayed the peppy, upbeat, pink wearing, fabulous woman that she is and rocked it. She reminds us to always be yourself. 2. Leslie Knope - Parks and RecLeslie Knope is the ultimate bad ass woman to look up to. She is amazing at her job and works really hard to be that way. You don't just see her as a successful woman, you see the (wo)man hours she puts into it. She follows her passions and always stands up for what she believes in, even though a lot of the time she has zero to no support. She also balances her work with friendships and fun activities. She is also always kind to people but is aggressive enough that she demands respect. I also love that the writers made her a strong female lead on her own. The main focus of the show isn't her love story (which is super cute) but it's just about her. You spend the show rooting her on and cheering for her. Her success will feel like your success and her failures will break your heart and I think a lot of this comes from the relatability (real word?) of her character. She isn't perfect but she works pretty damn hard to try her best to be. 3. Liz Lemon - 30 RockAgain I am praising a show for showing a woman in the light of being a working woman and not totally, hyper-focusing on her love life. Liz Lemon is a geeky but awesome woman who I think has almost everyone's dream job. She pretty well depicts what it's really like being a woman, no over glamorizing here. And bonus points if you read Tina Fey's autobiography, Bossy Pants, because she talks about the show and the similarities between her and Liz Lemon. 4. Jess Day - New GirlJess Day is a great example of how you can be soft and kind and girly but that doesn't mean you aren't strong and smart. The quote above is one of my favorites out of the whole show. Here is the video clip below that has the whole quote. Sorry for the horrible quality. Who is your TV role model ?
